Mr. Good Buys was a home center chain in the New York and Philadelphia areas founded in 1984, the same year as rivals The Home Depot, Builders Square, and Home Quarters (HQ). Information on these stores is VERY scarce, but I do know they "said goodbye" in 1991. Their only store I know of is in Springfield, PA. The gigantic store is now subdivided into BJ's and Forman Mills. Forman Mills is now closing this store after they lost their lease.

That was an interesting post, thank you. I knew about Forman Mills, but didn't realize there was a Mr. Good Buys in that building before that. Also, I enjoyed seeing the commercials from so long ago - sort of like stepping into a time machine! Is the whole Forman Mills chain closing, or just that store?
ReplyDeleteAs I sit here today I got thinking of my old job with Mr. Goodbuys in Union, NJ, then I was promoted to dept. Mgr in the then new store in New Brunswick, NJ. I worked with them from 1985 to 1987 then moved to another state. Was the beginning of the DIY era. Had lots of fun back then.

DeleteI remember seeing Mr. Good Buys ads in the Star Ledger beginning in 1980. The ads were for the Union, NJ store.
ReplyDeleteI also worked at Mr. Goodbuys in Trenton, NJ. I started out as cashier & phone operator. I also worked in the Home Decor Department. Finally became Head Cashier. I was there from the day they opened until the day they closed. It was a great place to work.
